Nifuji introduced a paper entitled “Complete loss of H3K9 methylation dissolves mouse heterochromatin organization( NATURE COMMUNICATIONS | (2021)12:4359)”, which showed that compound mutant MEFs for all six SET domain lysine methyl- transferase (KMT) genes lack all H3K9 methylation states, derepress nearly all families of repeat elements and display genomic instabilities, and have lost electron-dense hetero-chromatin. Thus H3K9 methylation protects heterochromatin organization and genome integrity.
