Nifuji introduced a paper entitled “Suppression of RNA Recognition by Toll-like Receptors: The Impact of Nucleoside Modification and the Evolutionary Origin of RNA Immunity, Vol. 23, 165–175, 2005” which showed Dendritic cells exposed to modified RNA express less cytokines and activation markers than those treated with unmodified RNA and suggested that the innate immune system may detect RNA lacking nucleoside modification. This paper is a kind of break-through study by Drs.Katalin Karikó, and Drew Weissman, both of whom received Nobel Prize for 2023.
